What are the five components of an information system? |
1. People 2. Procedures 3. Software 4. Hardware 5. Data |
Let's talk about People, in terms of an MIS. Define them. How do they relate to the other components? |
People are end users who use computers to make themselves more productive. They are the most important part of any system. Their contact is direct and indirect. |
What are Procedures? How do they relate to the other components? |
Procedures specify rules or guidelines for computer operations. They provide detailed steps for how to perform specific tasks. Procedures are the glue that joins the other components together. |
What about Software? How does it relate to the other components? |
Software provides step by step instructions for computer hardware. Otherwise known as programs. Software is the code that makes a computer work. There is two types of software - system and application |
Let's talk about Hardware in terms of an MIS. Define it. How does it relate to the other components? |
Actual machinery of a computer. |
What about Data in terms of an MIS? Define it. How does it relate to the other components? |
Data consists of raw, unprocessed facts such as text, numbers, images and sounds. Processed data becomes information. |
What is a GUI? |
Graphical User Interface - a visual way of interacting with a computer using items such as menus and icons and windows |
What are the characteristics of a good GUI? Give seven. |
1. Use simple and natural dialogue in user's language 2. Provide shortcuts 3. Provide clearly marked exits 4. Permit easy reversal of actions 5. Strive for consistency 6. Provide useful help 7. Handle errors smoothly and positively |
What is basic application software? |
It's one of the two categories of end user software (the other is Specialised applications). Used to accomplish a variety of tasks. Basic applications are also called general purpose. Common types are things like Word processors (eg MS Word) spreadsheets (eg MS Excel), database management systems (eg MS Access, Oracle) and presentation graphics (eg MS Powerpoint) |
What is specialised application software? |
One of the two categories of end user software (the other is basic application software) Specialised applications are also known as special-purpose applications They include thousands of other programs that are more narrowly focused on specific occupations. The best known are graphic programs such as Adobe Photoshop, audio and video editors such as Adobe Premier Pro and web authoring such as Dreamweaver |
What is system software? |
It handles technical details It works with end users, application software and computer hardware Four types of programs: 1. Operating system, 2. Utilities, 3. Device drivers, 4. Language translators |
What are the four types of programs for system software? |
1. Operating system 2. Utilities 3. Device drivers 4. Language translators |
Discuss input devices |
Any data or instructions used by a computer. Keyboards, pointing devices, scanning devices, other devices such as web cams. They translate data into a form that the system unit can process. |
A PCI slot is a component of a PC systems unit. What are they? |
They are outlets in a motherboard that allow you to install extra components like sound cards, modems and video cards |
A processor is a component of a pc systems unit. What's a processor? |
The chip that does the thinking of the computer I.e. Intel quad and AMD. Processor speed is measured in Mhz and Ghz. 1 Ghz =1000Mhz |
Memory is a component of a pc systems unit. What is it? |
Where information is temporarily stored for the processor to use and manipulate before storing on the hard drive. Also known as RAM. RAM is measured in Mb. Information is stored in memory only if the computer is turned on. |
Motherboard, or main board, is a component of a PC systems unit. What is it? |
The motherboard is the backbone of a computer. All the individual pieces are connected to it in some way. Home to the PCI slot, processor chip and memory. |
The hard disk drive is a component of a PC systems unit. What is it? |
Part of the computer where memory is stored for later retrieval. All the information you access, such as documents, pictures, emails and programs are here. The hard drive stores info though even after the computer is turned off. |
Cd rom or dvd rom drives are a component of the PC systems unit. What are they? |
They play your music and data cds and dvds. Data cds hold up to 700mb of information. Dvds 4 - 8gb. |
Power supply is a component of a pc systems unit. What is it? |
In a personal computer the power supply is the metal box usually found in the corner of the case. It's visible from the back of many systems as it contains the power cord receptacle and cooling fan. receptacle and cooling fan. |
Discuss operating systems |
Often called software environment or platform Operating systems commonly used are Windows, MAC, Linux |
What is output? |
Processed data or information. Types of output are text, graphics, video and audio Output devices are monitors, speakers, printers |
Types of Secondary Storage - Flash memory cards |
Capacity building - over 1 terabyte of data Good way to transfer files |
Types of Secondary Storage - Internet 'hard drives' |
Cloud Low cost and can access any information, anywhere, using the Internet |
Types of Secondary Storage - Magnetic Tape |
External storage Information stored in sequence Slower than disks which provide direct access Magnetic tape streamers or tape cartridges used by both mainframes and microcomputers |
Computer network components consist of two parts. Computer Networks Connect Computers |
The items that are to be connected and the equipment that connects them |
What is MIS? |
Management Information Systems - The use of systems that provide businesses with the information necessary to make decisions and achieve goals and objectives |
What is Topology? |
It describes how a network is arranged. Types of network topology are: Star Bus Ring Tree |
Guiding Principles |
Is it legal? Is it balanced? Is it right? Do no harm to sentient beings |
Ethics Issues |
Privacy Accuracy Property |
