Buddhism
A philosophy created by Siddhartha Gautama in the 6th century B.C.
Siddartha Gautama
(A.K.A Buddha or "enlightened one") Founder of buddhism, born into a very royal family. When he found out about suffering in the world he dedicated his life to find a cure for human suffering
Nirvana
A state of ultimate reality, buddhists believe that once you find Nirvana you can die peacefully and stop being reincarnated over and over again.
Four Noble Truths
1. Ordinary life is full of suffering
2. The suffering is caused by our desire to satisfy ourselves
3. The way to end suffering is to end desire for selfish goals and to see others as extensions of ourselves
4. The way to end desire is to follow the Middle Path (eightfold path)
Eightfold Path
1. Right View, we need to know the 4 noble truths
2. Right intention, we need to decide what we really want.
3. Right speech, we must seek to speak truth and to speak well to others
4. Right action, The buddha gave 5 percepts: "Do not kill. Do not Steal. Do not lie. Do not be unchaste. Do not do drugs/alcohol."
5. Right livelihood, we must do work that uplifts our being.
6. Right effort, the Buddha said, "those who follow the Way might well follow the example of an ox that arches through the deep mud carrying a heavy load. He is tired, but his steady, forward-looking gaze will nor relax until he comes out of the mud
7. Right mindfulness, we must keep our minds in control of our senses: "all we are is the result of what we have thought."
8. Right concentration, we must meditate to see the world in a new way.
Gengis Khan
He was the leader of the Mongol army, he conquered more land and people than the romans. In the countries he owned, he increased trade and cultural communication, and he granted religious freedom.
Zheng He
Led 7 voyages on the water outside of China, brought back information about the outside world.
Qing Dynasty
Called the manchus. All males shaved their foreheads and put their hair into a pigtail, if refused, they were to be executed.
Canton
Guangzhou, a trading port. The portuguese were expelled from it.
Boxer Rebellion
Chinese people who wanted to kill all the foreigners in China. Empress Dowager was apart of it, but switched sides once they started dying out
What are the basic beliefs of Buddhism?
Reincarnation, everyone is equal, do unto others... (golden rule), etc
Explain the legacy of Gengis Khan
Led the mongols. conquered more land and people than theRomans. great leader
What were the cultural and artistic advancements of the Tang and Ming dynasties?
Ming rulers ran an effective government, set up a nationwide school system. Manufactured goods were produces in workshops/factories. Everything was going pretty well. Poetry was still very popular. Ming pottery (cobalt blue) was very common.
Why was Zheng He so important?
Because he connected China to the outside world
What was the purpose of footbinding?
Everyone thought that it made women more beautiful. Made their feet look like "lotus flowers".
How did Western influence impact China?
European glasses helped Chinese scholars read better. Christians were amazed at Chinese philosophies/beliefs such as Confucianism.
What caused the boxer rebellion?
The flood and the draught made the Chinese believe that the gods were angry that foreigners were in their land.
