First Intermediate Period (2134 - 2040 B.C.)

A breakdown in the unification of the Two Lands at the end of the Old Kingdom. During this period, several kings ruled Egypt at the same time from different capitals.

Faience

A glass-glazed quartz & ceramic material used to make figurines & other small objects.

"William"

A faience hippo figurine which is in the collection of the New York Met Museum of Art & is sort of a "mascot" for the museum.

Mentuhotep II (2061 - 2010 B.C.)

The king who re-unified the Two Lands through warfare over rival kings. He is considered the first king of Dynasty XI in the Middle Kingdom Period. He built an important mortuary temple complex at Deir el Bahri near Thebes.

Middle Kingdom

Period of Dynasties 11-12 (c. 2040 - 1640 B.C.)

Mortuary Temple

A temple dedicated to the gods, but intended for worship of a specific deceased person, usually a king.

Beni Hasan

The Site in Middle Egypt of a number of Middle Kingdom painted rock-cut tombs, including the tomb of the governor Khnumhotep II.

Nomes

The Egyptians divided the country into districts for administration & law enforcement purposes. The word 'nome' is a Greek word for these districts. The governor of the nomes was called a nomarch.

Shwabti

A figurine of a servant placed in a tomb to provide eternal service to the deceased.

Punt

A land mentioned in Egyptian texts, somewhere South & East of Egypt, which was a destination for Egyptian & perhaps Aegean Bronze Age traders.

Tell el Dab'a

A site excavated by Austrian Egyptologist Manfred Bietak. It was the capital of the Kyksos rulers of Lower Egypt from about 1650 - 1550 B.C. A palace complex with important bull-leaping frescoes was found here.

Mersa Gawasis

The site of an Egyptian port on the Red Sea, recently excavated by Fattovich & Bard. Pieces of wooden ships, ropes, & anchors were found here, along with pottery from the Canaanites & Minoans. Evidence was found that this port was connected to a port in Punt.

Second Intermediate Period

(1640 - 1532 B.C.) A breakdown in the unification of the Two Lands between the Middle & New Kingdoms. Dynasties 13-17.

Hyksos

A group of foreigners who ruled parts of Lower Egypt during the Second Intermediate Period. Dynasty XV is considered the Hyksos Dynasty.

Hierarchical Scale

A process where the artist portrays more important people as larger than other figure in the scene.
