A wiring color scheme less common than the newer 568B

568A

A wiring color scheme more common than the older 568A

568B

A wireless access mode that has clients communicate with each other without the user of a wireless access point

Ad-hoc mode

A wireless encryption protocol used with WPA2.

AES

A degradation of signal as it travels.

Attenuation

A wiring color scheme based on blue, orange, green, and brown.

BOGB

A method in which a wireless bridge is used to connect different 802.11 standards.

Bridge mode

A popular category of twisted pair that supports speed up to 100 Mbps.

Category 5e

A popular category of twisted pair that supports speeds up to 1000 Mbps.

Category 6

Two channels that do not overlap are used together in an effort to double the physical data rate.

Channel bonding

A device used to test a cable or wire.

Continuity tester

A type of patch cable. This type is used to connect like devices to each other (for example, a computer to another computer), or a switch to another switch.

Crossover cable

A common type of interference that occurs when the signal that is transmitted on one copper wire or pair of wires creates an undesired effect on another wire or pair of wires.

Crosstalk

An electromagnetic (EM) field that is generated by a network cable or network device, which can be manipulated to eavesdrop on conversations or to steal data.

Data emanation

A disturbance that can affect electrical circuits, devices, and cables due to electromagnetic conduction and possibly radiation.

Electromagnetic interference (EMI)

A form of cross talk interference, measured at the cable end farthest from the transmitter.

Far end crosstalk

An enclosure formed by conducting material or by a mesh of such material.

Faraday cage

A type of cable that transmits light (photons) instead of electricity, and this light is transmitted over glass or plastic.

Fiber optic cable

A method that sends two or more frames in a single transmission.

Frame aggregation

A standard used to ensure compatibility between devices.

IEEE 802.11

A port-based network access control used to secure wireless connection.

IEEE 802.X

A common wireless access mode that uses a wireless access point.

Infrastructure mode

Anything that disrupts or modifies a signal that is traveling along a wire.

Interference

Short for medium dependent interface, a type of port that does not include a crossover.

MDI

A type of port that includes a crossover connection.

MDI-X

A type of fiber optic cable that has a larger fiber core capable of carrying multiple rays of light.

multi-mode

A method that uses multiple antennas, increasing the number of signals for increased bandwidth.

Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO)

A form of cross talk that is measured interference between two pairs in a single cable, measured on the cable end nearest the transmitter.

near-end crosstalk

A type of cable that has a Teflon coating that makes them more impervious to fire.

plenum-rated

A tool used to terminate twisted pair cable to a patch panel.

punch down tool

An interference that can come from AM/FM transmissions and cell phone towers.

radio frequency interference (RFI)

A mechanism used to identify wireless networks.

service set identifier (SSID)

A type of fiber optic table that is meant to carry a single ray of light.

single mode

A twisted pair cable that has an aluminum shield inside the plastic jacket that surrounds the pairs of wires.

shielded twisted pair (STP)

The most common type of patch cable, it is the type that you would use to connect a computer to a central connecting device like a switch.
straight through cable
A type of wireless encryption used with WPA.
Temporal Key Integrity Protocol (TKIP)
Short for Telecommunications Industry Association/Electronics Industries Alliance, a standards and trade organization composed as an alliance of trade associations for electronics manufacturers in the United States.
TIA/EIA
The most common of all copper-based cables. A single twisted-pair cable has eight wires; they are copper conductors that transmit electric signals. These eight wires are grouped into four pairs.
twisted-pair cable
A trademarked term for WLAN.
Wi-Fi
An interim encryption protocol used with wireless networks; replaced WEP.
Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)
The first wireless encryption protocol. Since it is considered a weak encryption, it is not recommended.
Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
A wireless device that also acts as a router, firewall, and IP proxy.
wireless access point (WAP)
A type of wireless repeater that connects different 802.11 standards.
wireless bridge
A network composed of at least one WAP and at least one computer or handheld device that can connect to the WAP.
wireless LAN (WLAN)
A wireless adapter used to connect to a wireless access point or other wireless network adapter.
wireless network adapter
A wireless device used to extend the coverage of a wireless network.
wireless repeater
