Gram neg organisms have endotoxin while gram + organisms do not! TRUE/FALSE
FALSE Listeria monocytogenes, a G+ motile rod has endotoxin.
What type of tissue does L. monocytogenes have a tropism for?
nervous tissue. It is a common cause of meningitis in 2 groups.
1. neonates who contract it from asymptomatic mothers during delivery. others that cause this are B. streptococci and E. coli.
2. Immunosuppressed. Listeria is able to hide and survive within macrophages and neutrophils. They can survive outside or within cells they are referred to as Facultative intracellular organisms.
How is Listeria m. diagnosed?
Via cerebrospinal fluid analysis. A high number of neutrophils, a high protein level, a low glucose, and the Gram stain may reveal G+ rods.
What is the therapeutic protocol?
Ampicillin/Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole.
What is the toxin of L. monocytogenes?
LPS lipid A- the only G+ organism which has LPS.
