The invention of the microscope, telescope.
- Occured in the 1600s, with an improvement of lense technology. Led to the discovery of cells.
The invention of the electron microscope.
Made by James Hillier and Albert Prebus at the University of Toronto.
The transmission electron microscope, or TEM
Creates images by streaming a beam of electrons through a thin slice of substance. Creates a two dimensional image.
The Scanning Electron Microscope, or SEM.
The image is produced by a beam of electrons, which scan the surface of the sample. As secondary electrons are re-radiated by the specimen, they form a quality 3 dimensional image.
Scanning Tunelling Microscope (STM)
an electron probe is placed near the surface of the sample, and an image is created which can be converted by computer to a topographical image. Used for atomic level imaging, manipulating molecules and atoms.
Used in nanotechnology.
