What is the classic symptom of diarrhea caused by organisms that invade the enteric mucosa?
Bloody diarrhea
What are the 4 maqin bacterial causes of bloody diarrhea?
Shigella
Salmonella Campylobacter E. colio157:H7 |
Of the 4 major causes of invasive diarrhea, which 2 do not ferment lactose?
Shigella and Salmonella
What are some other bacteria that can cause a bloody diarrhea/
Yersinia enterocolitica
Vibrioparahemolyticus Bacillus anthracis(rare) |
What does methylene blue staining indicate?
Leukocytes are present in the stool. This indicates an invasive organism(Shigella, Salmonella, Campylobacter, E. coli 0157:H7), and not one of the toxin producing organisms(except C. difficile).
Which curved G- rod causes a bloody diarrhea and is associated with Guillian-Barre' syndrome?
C. jejuni
Which is the most common cause of diarrhea worldwide?
Campylobacter
What is the reservoir for C. jejuni?
Domestic animals such as dogs, cattle and chickens.
What is the clinical course of the disease?
Usually causes enterocolitis with initial watery stools, then lower abdominal pain, bloody mucopurulent diarrhea, and fever. Symptoms usually resolve in 7 days.
What autoimmune diseases can develop subsequent to GI infection with Campylobacter?
Guillian-Barre' syndrome, Reiter's syndrome, and reactive arthritis.
How is alab diagnosis made?
C. jejuni must be grown under special conditions to select for it. Namely, a blood agar and antibiotic coupled with a temperature of 42C and an atmosphere of 10% CO2 and 5% O2.
What is the treatment for C. jejuni diarrhea?
Ciprofloxacin or erythromycin can both be given to shorten the duration of symptoms and to prevent the spread of disease to others.
Does Shigella have a high or low ID50?
Very low. Just a hundred organisms can cause disease.
There is no animal reservoir for Shigella, it only infects humans. TRUE/FALSE
TRUE
Does Shigella cause disease through toxin production or neteroinvasion of the mucosa?
Through invasion of the mucosa. Mutated starins without the Shiga toxin still cause disease but mutated starins that cannot invade do not cause disease.
