What is the genus of salmonella?

Salmonella is a very large genus of bacteria. One species is of interest. S. enterica is divided into many serovars, based on variation in the major surface antigens.

How are salmonella identified?
|
Many gram - enteric bacteria are named and designated according to specific antigens. H, the flagellar antigen; K, the capsular antigen; and O, the cell wall antigen. Not all carry the H/K antigens but all have O, the polysdaccharide antigen portion of the lipopolysaccharide implicated in endotoxic shock.

List some characteristics of Salmonella.

They are motile, ferment glucose with acid and most of them produce H2S, but not urease.
Grow readily on most lab media and can survive in many inhospitable environments. |
