Who Invented the first Compound Microscope? And how much could it magnify?

Robert Hooke

25x

Published his observations and named the book "Micrographia"

Who Invented the Microscope that could magnify 200-300x?

Anton von Leeuwenhoek

-Described what he saw as "animalcules"

-Wrote 100's of letters to the Royal Society

-Was burried with his microscopes

Whats the difference between Biogenesis vs. Spontaneous generation?

Biogenesis: Life comes from life (Have to have life to get life)

Spontaneous generation: Life came from a "vital force" from dead or decaying materials (Living things come from non living things)

What expierment did Francesco Redi design to try to settle the argument of Biogenesis vs. Spontaneous generation?

He put a slice of meat in a jar and left it there for a couple of days in which maggots appeared. But not everyone was convinced that this proved vital force because some believed flys flew in layed there eggs in the decaying meat and thats what caused maggots to appear. So he ran the experiment again but this time he covered the jar couple days later no maggots appeared. Some people argued that it was because vital force couldn't get in. End result biogensis and spontaneous generation was nethier proved nor disproved.

Who disproved vital force? And what was the experiment performed to do so?

Louis Pasteur

His experment was first he'd started with sterilized broth than he attached a swam neck flask to the beaker so if vital force exsisted it could get in. A few days later there was no microorganisms because they were unable to reach the broth ultimately proving biogenesis. But to futher prove his theory he broke the top off of the beaker and a few days later microorganisms appeared than he tilted the beaker laying it on its side with the swam neck flask and a few days later microorganisms appeared. Showing that life comes from life not death.

Who was the first to discover handwashing? And how was it discovered?

Iganz Semmelweis

Discovered more pregnant women we're dying in the hospital than by midwife. Turned out most med students handled cadavers right before. So he instructed his students to wash their hands and the death rates of pregnant women in the hospital dropped dramatically.

He was arrested and thrown in the looney bin for suggesting hand washing.

Who gave birth to modern sanatation standards and how was it discovered?

John snow

He found a connection between where cholera outbreaks occur and sewer pumps near drinking water causing contamintion of feces in the water.

What is the study of epidemiology?

The Study of the cause and transmission of disease.

Who proposed germ theory and who proved it?

Louis Pasteur was the first to propose germ theory which is the theory that certain animalcules/bacteria could cause human disease.

Robert Koch proved germ theory with his Koch's postulates.

Who coined the fraze bacteria?

Christian Ehrenberg

Who discovered pasteurization?

Louis Pasteur

Did this by heating liquid to 55°C to keep bacteria from growing

Who invented the method now known as Antisepsis?

Joseph Lister

Used carbolic acid spray on wounds after surgery which dramatically reduced death by surgery.

What are the four Koch's Postulates?

Answer key:

What is variolation?

Grinding of dead peoples blisters and shot up ur nose to form immunity.

Not very safe cause you don't know what other disease the dead could of had.

Who invented the first vaccine and how?

Edward Jenner

He found that milk-maids who contracted cow-pox were resistant to small pox. So he used cow-pox lesions and injected them into people to innoculate them.

Vacca=cow

Who gave birth to the study of virology and how was it discovered?

Walter Reed

Was the first to discover yellow fever was caused by a virus, not the liquid itself.

Who could not grow organisms that caused tobacco mosaic disease even when using Koch's postulates?

Dimitri Ivanowsky

Concluded it was a contagious, living, poison (=virus) liquid

Eukaryotes vs. Prokaryotes

Eukaryotes:

Nucleus, contain organelles, precursor to organisms that eventually formed multicellular animals, majority macroscopic (plants, animals, fungi & protozoa)

Prokaryotes:

No Nucleus, lack organelles, all microorganisms, older than eukaryotes and also can engage in nearly every activity that eurkaryotes can & many can function in ways eukaryotes cannot

What is a virus?

A non- independently living cellular organism that lives inside a host and is composed of ethier DNA or RNA, but not both, and has a protein coat

Do the Classification organized into descending ranks, beginning with general all-inculsive taxonomic category and ending with the smallest and most specific category.
