19 Cards in this Set

  • Front
  • Back
A type of slime mold that forms into a plasmodium.
Acellular Slime Mold
An unicellular protist structure; sometimes grows in large groups as kelps and seaweeds.
Algae
A type of protozoan; amoebas are pseudopodia and move by crawling.
Amoebas
Adenisine triphosphate, the cell's energy storage chemical.
ATP
A type of slime mold that grows as a group of individual cells.
Cellular Slime Mold
A material that uses energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates and oxygen. Captures photons of light and transfers the energy to mitochondria that, in turn, produce ATP.
Chlorophyll
Organelles that contain chlorophyll.
Chloroplasts
A type of protozoan that uses its organelles of motility for locomotion and food gathering through cilia that beat in a coordinated manner.
Ciliates
The resting, or dormant form, of a protozoan during its lifetime.
Cyst
Algae that produces a silicon structural matrix that settles to the bottom of the ocean when the organisms die.
Diatoms
A type of protozoan that uses its organelles of motility for locomotion and food gathering.
Flagellates
The process of using energy from sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into carbohydrates.
Photosynthesis
Oxygen-producing, free-floating masses found in the worlds saline waters; the basis for the marine food chain.
Phytoplankton
A collection of cells that are fused together.
Plasmodium
A broad grouping of eukaryotes other than plants, animals, and fungi. The kingdom Protista includes algae, protozoa, and slime molds; usually have rigid cell walls.
Protists
Unicellular protists that lack photosynthetic ability; can be identified microscopically by locomotion apparatus, general shape and size, number of nuclei, and presence of cyst forms.
Protozoans
Protist molds that produce spores and usually grow in fungi habitats. They are not considered fungi; several slime molds have flagella or pseudopodia, wheras all fungi are nonmotile.
Slime mold
An infectious form produced by sporozoa, a type of protozoan with no appendages.
Sporozoite
The vegetative, or growing form, of a protozoan during its lifetime.
Trophozoite
