Virus
The causative agent of an infectious disease.
Saprophyte
A plant, fungus, or microorganism that lives on dead or decaying organic matter.
Bacteria
Very small organisms made up of one cell.
Inoculate
To give (a person or animal) a weakened form of a disease in order to prevent infection by the disease.
Binary Fission
Reproduction of a cell by division in to two approximately equal parts.
Pathogen
a bacterium, virus, or other microorganism that can cause disease.
Yeast
A microscopic fungus consisting of single oval cells that reproduce by budding used in bread and beer.
Fungi
An organism that feeds on organic matter and reproduces through spores.
Budding
Being in an early stage of development.
Sporangium
A receptacle in which asexual spores are formed.
Spore
A small single-celled reproductive body that is capable of growing into a new organism, produced especially by certain bacteria, fungi, algae, and nonflowering plants.
Viral DNA
A virus containting DNA as it's genetic material.
Flagellum
A long tapering process that process the projects singly or in groups from a cell and is the primary organ of motion of many microorganisms.
Capsid
The protein coat or shell of a virus particle surrounding the nucleic acid or nucleoprotein core.
Bacterial Chromosome
The part of a bacterium or virus that contains nucleic acid.
Anaerobic respiration
The form of respiration with oxygen absent.
Aerobic respiration
The form of respiration with oxygen present.
Carbon Dioxide
A gas that is produced when people and animals breathe out or when certain fuels are burned and that is used by plants for energy.
Ethanol
Alcohol used in beer making.
Rennet
Rennet is an extract from the stomach of certain animals. It is used in cheesemaking.
Penicillin
An antibiotic or group of antibiotics produced naturally by certain blue moulds, now usually prepared synthetically. It is a medicine that is used to kill harmful bacteria.
Microbes
An extremely small living thing that can only be seen with a microscope.
Agar plate
(typically agar plus nutrients) used to culture microorganisms or small plants.
Hyphae
Each of the branching filaments that make up the mycelium of a fungus.
Host cell
A cell that harbours foreign molecules, viruses or micro-organisms.
