Causes of pharyngitis and tonsillitis

Virus: adenoviruses, cytomegalovirus, Epstein-Barr virus.


Bacteria: streptococcus pyogenes, neisseria gonorrhoeae, haemophilus influenzae.

Why is streptococcus pyogenes infection in the upper respiratory tract very dangerous?

Complication 1: scarlet fever, a rash that could turn into septicaemia and ultimately sepsis, causing inflammation throughout the body.


Complication 2: rheumatic fever, host antibodies targeting S. Pyogenes also attack the heart tissue.
