Incidence

The number of new cases of a particular illness present in a population during during a specified period of time. It is often associated to the probability of getting a disease. It is often use to determine how quickly an infection could spread in a population.

Endemic

A disease that is always present in a geographical area or population. Ex: Lyme disease in Northern USA

Sporadic

A disease that occurs occasionally in a population. For example, Yersinia pestis infections are sporadic in USA.

Outbreak

A sudden increase in the number of cases of a particular illness beyond the baseline or what would normally be expected. It is often localized to a limited geographical area.

Epidemic

A sudden increase in the number of cases of a particular illness beyond the baseline or what would normally be expected. It is often localized to a limited geographical area.

Pandemic

A sudden increase in the number of cases of a particular illness beyond the baseline or what would normally be expected. The geographical distribution is very large including multiple countries or continents.

Mortality Rate

Number of deaths caused by a particular disease in a given period of time in relation to the total population. For example, the mortality rate for pancreatic cancer cancer was 10.9 per 100,000 men and women per year on 2008-2012.

Index case

The first identified case in a group of related cases of a particular communicable disease.

Attack Rate

It is the proportion of the population that develops an illness during an outbreak.

IgG

Monomer. The major antibody for antibody based immunity against invading pathogens, it can also cross into the placenta.

IgA

Monomer-blood, Dimer-secretions. Found in breathing passages, nose, ears, eyes, digestive tracts and vagina, it protects the body surfaces from foreign substances.

IgM

Pentamer. The first antibody created, it is involved in B cell mediated immunity before there are sufficient IgG. Also it is found on B cells as receptors.

IgD

Monomer. Receptors on B cells.

IgE

Monomer. It binds to allergens and triggers the release of histamine from mast cells and is involved in allergy. It also protects against parasitic worms.
