Gram staining

A method of staining bacteria which aids identification.

Gram positive bacteria

These bacteria appear violet when stained and viewed under the microscope.

Gram negative bacteria

These bacteria appear red when stained and viewed under a microscope.

Peptidoglycan

Part of the cell wall of a bacteria, also known as murien.

Lipopolysaccharide

A layer of a cell wall found in only gram negative bacteria.

A procedure performed under sterile conditions
