Tx for Onchocerca Volvulus and other Filariae Tissue Nematodes.
MOA:Increases GABA = paralysis and death. |
IVERMECTIN
Also causes Mazotti Rxn: Fever, rash, hypotension, Arthalgias, Vertigo. Tx: Antihistimines + NSAIDS |
These drugs act to inhibit microtubule synthesis and function causing decreased absorbtion and secretion. Used for the Tx of Intestinal Nematodes.
MEBENDAZOLE
ALBENDAZOLE Contraindicated in pregnancy. |
Activates Nicotinic receptors = paralysis via neuromuscular blockade. Used for Tx of Intestinal Nematodes. Is a CIDAL drug.
PYRANTEL PAMOATE
Used in the Tx of Cestodes and Trematodes, this drug increases calcium = contraction and paralysis and also increases LFT's. Often used with Niclosamide.
PRAZIQUANTEL
Acts as an uncoupler of Ox Phos or by activating ATPases to stop ATP production = Death.
Used in the Tx of Cestodes and Trematodes along with Praziquantel. |
NICLOSAMIDE
Unknown MOA this drug is the drug of choice in Loa Loa and W. Bancrofti infections.
DIETHYLCARBAMAZINE
Also causes Mazotti Rxn: Fever, rash, hypotension, Arthalgias, Vertigo. Tx: Antihistimines + NSAIDS |
Antihelminthic agent used for the tx of river blindness (caused by Onchocerca volvulus) and threadworm infection (Strongyloides stercoralis)
IVERMECTIN
Incrases GABA mediated neurotransmission, but since it does not cross the human BBB, it selectively affects the nematode, resulting in paralysis of the worm. |
Used for the tx of many helminth infections, it is the drug of choice for pinworms, the most common helminth infection in the US.
MEBENDAZOLE
Functions by inhibiting microtubule synthesis and glucose uptake in helminths; related drugs such as albendazole and thiabendazole are the alternatives. |
Trypanosomiciadal drug used for the tx of Chagas disease.
NIFURTIMOX
Drugs used to treat African trypanosomiasis include PENTAMIDINE, SURAMIN and MELARSOPROL |
Primary drug used for the tx of trematode (fluke) and cestode (tapeworm) infections.
PRAZIQUANTEL
Increases calcium permeability in the worm, resulting in paralysis; NICLOSAMIDE, which functions by uncoupling oxidative phaosphorylation (inhibiting ATP production) or by activating ATPases, often in used with PARZIQUANTEL in cestode infections. |
Antihelminthic agent, often used with Mebendazole for the tx of roundworm, pinworm, and hookworm infections.
PYRANTEL PAMOATE
Stimulates nicotinic receptors in the nematode, resulting in a spastic paralysis. |
