Micro-organism
This term refers to microscopic organisms and includes viruses, bacteria, protoctista (protists), and some fungi and algae.
Bacteria
Small organisms consisting of single cells rarely more than 0.01mm in length. Can only be seen under a microscope. Their cell walls are made of a complex mixture of proteins, sugars, and lipids. Some have a slime capsule outside their cell wall. Inside their cell wall is the cytoplasm which contains granules of glycogen, lipid and other food preserves. (singular= bacterium)
Flagella
Used to move bacterial cell about.
Aerobic Bacteria
Bacteria which need oxygen for their respiration.
*These types of bacteria are used in the filter beds of sewage plants. |
Anaerobic Bacteria
Bacteria that don't need oxygen for respiration.
*These types of bacteria are used to digest sewage sludge and produce methane. |
Fission
The way bacteria reproduce; cell division.
Asexual Reproduction
Reproduction without the formation of gametes.
Pathogens
Parasitic organisms which cause disease.
Host
The organism in which bacteria live and reproduce.
Viruses
Most viruses are way smaller than bacteria and can only be seen with the electron microscope at magnifications of about X 30,000. They consist of a DNA or RNA core enclosed in a protein coat.
Bacterial Diseases
Tetanus, pneumonia, typhoid and syphilis.
Viral Diseases
Influenza, colds, herpes, and AIDS.
Fungi
Formed from thread-like hyphae rather than cells.
Mycelium
The network that are produced by branching hyphae.
Hyphae
Have walls, cytoplasm, nuclei, vacuoles, organelles, and inclusions.
Saprotrophic Fungi
Digest dead organic matter.
Parasitic Fungi
Digest living tissue.
