What are the morphologic characteristics of Haemophilus influenzae?
Small, non-motile gram negative coccobacilli-filamentous rods
What are the natural reservoirs for H. influenzae?
None - humans are the only hosts.
What are strains of H. influenzae?
Type B, and non-typeable H. influenzae
What diseases are caused by non-typeable H. influenzae?
Mucosal infections - AOE, sinusitis, COPD exacerbations, pneumonia
What diseases are caused by Type B H. influenzae?
Invasive infections - meningitis, epiglottitis, periorbital cellulitis, pneumonia
Is there a vaccine for H. influenza?
Only Type B H. influenzae - vaccinated hosts are still vulnerable to non-typeable H. flu infections.
Which Haemophilus species is an STD?
H. ducreyi - causes genital ulcers and inguinal lymphadenitis
What is the disease course of H. ducreyi infection?
Starts as papule -> painful ulcer -> 50% lymphadenitis. DDx includes primary/secondary T. palladium, HSV-2, LGV/C. trachomatis
