What Fluids does the Immune System Involve?
-Extracellular Fluid (just outside cells)
-Reticuloendothelial System (connective tissue fluids and fibers)

-Blood Stream
-Lymphatic System
What Tissues are in the Immune System?
-Primary Organs (BONE MARROW & THYMUS GLAND)
-Secondary Organs (lymph nodes, spleen, GALT)
What Cells are involved in the Immune System?
-Blood Cells (formed by Homopoiesis)

Erythrocyte= Red blood cells
Thrombocyte= Platelets
Leukocyte= White blood cells
What is Histamine?
produced by mast cells and basophils during inflammation and ALLERGY.
increased permeability
What is Interleukin 1?
-produced by macrophages.
-produced during specific immune response.
-stimulates T cells and B cells
What is Interleukin 2?
-Produced by Helper T cells
-Produced during specific immune response
-Stimulates proliferation of T and B cells
First Line of Defense:
Physical Barrier- outer layer of skin tight layer of epithelial cells
Mechanical Barrier- movement of cilia flushing with urine or feces
Chemical Barrier- Chemicals associated with other barriers
Genetic Barrier- many microbes will only infect one species
Second Line of Defense:
slightly more internalized nonspecific system of protective cells, fluids, and mechanisms.

Inflammation- rubor, tumor, calor (heat), dolo (pain)

Phagocytosis- large solid particles are engulfed by a cell

The Complement System-
Fever
Interferon- inhibit the spread of viral particles
Natural Killer Cells(stimulated by cytokines)
Third line of Defense:
acquired specific immunity

Provides current infections or disease and long term immunity
What Cells are needed for long term immunity?
Memory Cells
What is Natural Active Immunity?
Getting the infection.

person gets the disease and develops own antibodies and memory cells
What is Natural Passive Immunity?
mother to child (temporary)
What is Artificial Active Immunity?
Vaccination
What is Artificial Passive Immunity?
immunotherapy (recieving someone elses antibodies to protect due to exposure to disease or as a treatment)
Staphylococcus Aureus?
Disease?
Symptoms?
Major Vaccines?
1) Food Poisoning-
-vomiting, diarrhea, cramps
-resolves itself

2)Scalded Skin Syndrome
-painful red flush over body, first blister then desquamation.
-NOT penicillin

3) Toxic Shock Syndrome
-high fever, vomiting, diarrhea, rash, dizziness, aches
-NOT Penicillin

4) Super Staph
-treatment=vancomycin
Streptococcus Pyogenes?
Disease?
Symptoms?
Major Vaccines?
PENICILLIN
1) Pyoderma
-burning, itchy papules that break into form highly contagious yellow crusts

2) Necrotizing Fasciitis
-raised red area around cut, fever, severe pain/swelling

3)Scarlet Fever
-high fever, bright red rash over face and body

4) Rheumatic Fever
-carditis, arthritis, nodules under skin, fever

5)acute glomerulonephritis
-low urine output, swelling hands and feet, high blood pressure
Neisseria Gonorrheae?
disease
symptoms
vaccines?
PENICILLIN
1)Genital gonorrhea in male/female
-pain urination, cloudy/bloody discharge
Neisseria Menigitidis?
RIFAMPIN,TETRACYCLINE

1)meningitis
Fever, sore throat, head, stiff neck, vomiting, coma
Bacillus Anthracis?
CIPROFLAXACIN
1) Cutaneous Anthrax
- small papule progresses to Black Eschar

2) Pulmonary anthrax (woolsorter)
fatigue, malaise,fever, aches, cough
Clostridium Perfringens?
(gas gangrene)

intense pain with swelling and tissue death

clean/ amputation/ oxygen therapy
Clostridium difficile?
Diarrhea, ab pains, fever,

oral vancomycin
Clostridium Tetani?
(tetanus)

clenching of jaw, arch of back, flex of arms, extension of legs, death

penicillin or tetracycline
Clostridium Botulinum?
Botulism

Double vision, difficulty swallowing and speaking, nausea, vomiting

Penicillin
Corynebacterium Diphtheriae?
Diptheria

low fever, sore throat, congestion, nausea,

Penicillin or Erythromycin
DTAP
