Adoption
in microbiology, the establishment and further
spreading of a pathogen within a new host population
Antigenic drift
small changes in the viral coat (surface pro-teins) that happen over time. Antigenic drift can produce a new influenza viral strain that may not be recognized by the body's immune system
.
Antigenic shift
a process involving at least two different strains of viruses, or even different viruses, combining to form a new virus that may then infect different species
Emerging infectious diseases
diseases that are newly identified in the population, or have existed but have changed
Reemerging infectious diseases
older diseases thought to be under control but that are reemerging.
Urbanization
a process by which large numbers of people become concentrated in smaller areas, forming cities
Thermal death point (TDP)
the lowest temperature required to kill a population of microorganisms in liquid suspension in 10 minutes
Thermal death time (TDT)
the shortest time required to kill
a population of microorganisms at a specific temperature.
Tyndallization
Heat sterilization by steaming the food or medium for a few minutes at atmospheric pressure on three or four successive occasions, separated by 12- to 18-hour intervals of incubation at a temperature favorable for bacterial growth.
Lypholization
is a method of removing all moisture from a material by sublimation. The frozen specimen is placed in a vessel and a vacuum is created within that vessel causing the ice to undergo a phase transition from a solid to a gas with no liquid phase. It is usually used to preserve biological materials containing proteins. Lypholization prevents the hydrolysis of peptide bonds in proteins.
