slide 1
thank you professor Washburn, colleagues. my name is Frances lepe and I have the privilege of giving the first presentation on management in action in which I will be discussing a case with elon musk and Tesla motors
slide 2
to begin I will give an overview of elon musk, followed by an introduction of the business week article, I will then give an explanation of what is a patent, after which I will talk about corporate social Responsibility' and conclude with look at CSR or profit
slide 3
most of you already know the man who time magazine named one of the most influential people in the world, but for those who don't I will give a quick overview. elon musk was born in south Africa. he helped create PayPal which was bought out by eBay in 2002 for 1.5 billion. he is the CEO of Tesla motors, space x and is the chairman of so!or city. his net worth according to Forbes is 7.5 billion dollars. but the thing I find most interesting is he did all that with just a bachelors degrees from the university of Pennsylvania
on a side note, I discovered he was originally shy but he learned to become a master showman who now gives speeches to large crowds so I'm hoping to be channeling him right now
slide 4
the business week article entitled why elon musk just opened Tesla's patents to his biggest rivals talks about how Tesla is allowing other companies to use its inventions so that the rest of the automotive market can catch up with regards to electric cars. Tesla motors has proven with the model s that there is a demand for electric cars. the patents that Tesla motors are allowing their competitors to view include the innovations the company has made with regards to lower cost and safer features.
slide 5
what is a patent?
it is a form of protection for intellectual property that ensures you and only you will be profiting from your invention. many companies choose to keep their patents secure such as apple which allows them to sue others who try to copy them.
slide 6
corporation who are devoting real time and money to environmental sustainability programs, alternative energy and various social welfare initiatives to benefit the community. it's more than green washing or just talking about making an environmental impact, it's making it happen
slide 7

the reason I chose this particular case is because this is a real world example that corporate social responsibility and profit can co exist. most people think that in order to be successful you have to forgo CSR in order to make a profit. or you have to choose one or the other but this is a prime example how you can do both.
so long as you keep yourself ahead of the game, keep innovating and never lose focus of the thing that matter most, which is our earth.
