Path-goal theory

How leaders motivate followers. Leaders style in the org setting. Choose style that best motivates followers needs. Make path to goal reachable and rewarding. Increase success and satisfaction

Expectancy theory

Goals that followers choose and how leaders choose and how leaders help them and reward them for meeting those goals

3 major components of path goal theory
Leader behaviors, follower characteristics, and task characteristics


4 types of leader behaviors

1. Directive- initiating/ telling, sets clear standards


2. Supportive- approachable, makes people feel comfortable


3. Participative- consults with followers on ideas


4. Achievement- oriented- sets goals high , places much faith in followers

4 follower characteristics:

1. Need for affiliation- supportive/ friendly relationship


2. Structure- directive with clear path


3. Control-internal, believe they are in charge/participative. External, fate controls them/directive


4. Perceptions of owns abilities- complete work on own with high abilities and need directive with few

Task characteristics that lead to motivation (3):

Followers task, formal authority system of org, and primary work group of followers. (They can do their work on their own without the help of a leader unless there are obstacles

Directive leadership traits



Guidance, the follower is authoritarian, and the task is unclear or complex

Supportive leadership traits

Nurturance, follower is needy and unsatisfied, the task is repetitive and easy



Participative leadership traits

Involved, the follower has a need for control or clarity and the task is unclear or unstructured

Achievement oriented leadership traits

There are challenges, the follower has high expectations for themselves and feels the need to excel, the task is challenging and complex
