Bowen Phenomenon of Interest |
The 'emotional' family functioning. Bowen viewed the family as a system, capable of dynamic change (when one member changes, other members of the family may be impacted). As a system, emotional dysfunction is a dysfunction in the balance of family relationships. |
Bowen's 8 Major Concepts |
1. Triangles 2. Differentiation of Self 3. Nuclear Family as Emotional System 4. Family Projection Process 5. Multi-generational Transition Process 6. Emotional Cutoff 7. Sibling Position 8. Societal Emotional Process |
Triangle |
The "two-person system" may function satisfactorily until tension causes one or both of the individuals to feel uncomfortable.
To relieve the tension a third person (an outsider) will strive to form a togetherness with one of the twosome. |
Differentiation of Self |
Degree to which intellectual system influences emotional system. "The differentiated person has intellectual & emotional systems that function separately."
Assessed on a continuum: Low= Inter-psychic element ('emotional stuck togetherness') → High= intra-psychic level of self-maturity ('solid self' w/ clearly defined beliefs/opinions) |
Nuclear Family as Emotional System |
The pattern of emotional functioning in a family in a single generation (husband, wife, children)
Family Projection Process |
Children are invested with the emotional myths and values of the family. Parental level of differentiation are projected to their kids
Multi-generational Transmission Process |
The mechanism by which family functioning is transmitted from generation to generation. The emotional patterns in nuclear family replicates patterns in the spouses family of origin and will probably be repeated in future generations. May be healthy or unhealthy patterns. |
Emotional Cutoff |
The severing of emotional ties with some members of the family, accomplished by withdrawal, isolation. Denial, and /or running away from the family.
Sibling Position |
The place a person occupies with regard to siblings. The enactment of roles related to sibling position is influenced by differentiation. Bowen views the oldest sibling as having the most responsibility |
Societal Emotional Process |
Indicates how the family responds to societal changes/demand |
