What is Music Therapy?

Bruscia Definition

Music Therapy is a reflexive process wherein the therapist helps the client to optimize the client's health, using various facets of music experience and the relationships formed through them as the impetus for change.

4 Main types of MT methods

1. Improvisation

The therapist works with the client through spontaneous and impromptu music playing or singing. This method is used best to adjust to a clients needs during the session and has the most flexibility.

2. Re-creative (performing)

The therapist and the client work together in music to re write or change music that has already been written.

3. Receptive (listening)

The therapist uses music listening activities to engage the client in things like pre-composed music, or lyric analysis.

4. Composing (song writing)

The therapist works with the client to entirely create their own music from melody to lyrics.

all these methods help clients externalize inner thoughts, feelings, etc. and help communicate in any way that they possibly can by musicing
