Define: Meteorology
The study of the atmosphere and atmospheric conditions.
Define: Weather
Conditions of the atmosphere at a particular place and time.
Define: Climate
Average regional weather conditions over a period of time.
Air
- A mixture of gases surrounding us
- density = mass/volume
- factors that affect density = temperature and water content.
Atmosphere
- begins at sea level
- atmospheric pressure decreases with altitude
- Layers "Tasty Surf Makes Tommy Excited"
- Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, Exosphere.
Troposphere
- Bottom layer
- temperature decrease in altitude a.k.a. environmental lapse rate.
Stratosphere
- tropopause between troposphere and stratosphere
- temperature increases due to presence of the ozone layer
- temperature increases to an altitude of ~ 50km above the surface
Mesosphere
- Temperature decreases until ~80km above surface
- coldest atmospheric temperatures
Thermosphere
- Atmospheric density is extremely low
- Temperature increases to 1000°c with altitude caused by absorption of short wave UV radiation
- ionosphere - layer of ionisation and the place where the Aurora are produced
Exosphere
- outside atmosphere
- extremely tenuous gas laws
