* represented in 5 numbers unless the speed is greater than 99 knots (6 numbers).


* First 3 numbers indicate the direction that the wind is blowing from in tens of degrees (ex 140)




* if the wind is variable, then "VRB" will go after the numbers




* The last two digits indicate the speed of the wind in knots unless the wind is greater than 99 knots, in which case it is indicated by three digits. (ex 21)




* If the winds are gusting, the letter "G" follows the wind speed numbers, and then the numbers right after G indicate the highest expected gust winds ( ex = G26)


Visibility




EX: 3/4 SM

the prevailing visibility ( 3/4 SM ) is reported in statute miles as denoted by the letters "SM". It is reported in both miles and fractions of miles. In this case, 3/4 of a mile.

Weather

Two Categories: Qualifiers and Weather Phenomenon




First, the qualifiers of intensity, proximity, and the descriptor of the weather will be given.




Intensity might be light (-), moderate ( ), or heavy (+).




Proximity only depicts weather phenomena that are in the airport vicinity. The notation "VC" indicates a specific weather phenomenon is in the vicinity of 5 to 10 miles from the airport. For example, "SHRA" means showers and moderate rain in the vicinity.
