It was important because it was the religious center, the school, the store house, and the market all in one. It could be compared to a church, a school, Weis Markets, and a warehouse all in one. |

If this area had suffered a 10 year drought there is a good chance theriver would have shrunk and there would not have been enough water to watertheir crops or it may have been too far away to water their crops. It also would have made drinking waterdifficult as well as creating bricks to build. It may have ended the civilization. |

In Sumer woman had many rights as today. They could own and sell property and run their own businesses. In the home women had far fewer rights thantoday. If her husband wanted to he coulddivorce her at any time and could even sell or rent her if he neededmoney. That does not happen in themodern USA. |
