Troilus

Troilus (son of king of troy) and cressida were lovers and had exchanged vows of eternal fidelity. However, during the seige of troy, cressida was handed over to the greeks in an exchange of prisoners. She had vowed to remain constant , but soon fell in love with diomed . For a long time, every night troilus stood on the walls of troy looking at the greek camp. Thus cressida became a symbol of unfaithful lovers.


Thisbe

A babylonian maiden. She and her lover pyramus were forbidden to meet by their parents. One day they arranged to meet in a forest . Thisbe saw a lion and fled leaving her cloak behind. Pyramus saw her blood stained cloak, thought Thisbe was dead and killed himself. Thisbe returned, saw her lovers body and killed herself too. Both became symbols of faithful lovers.

Dido

The love story of Aeneas and dido is narrated by Virgil in the Aeneid. Aeneas was the trojan warrior who founded the city of Rome. During his voyages he reached Carthage where he loved queen dido. After a long stay with her , he sailed away leaving dido heartbroken. She killed herself out of grief .


Shakespeare says that it must have been on a beautiful moon-night that dido walked sadly on the seashore ,holding in her hand a willow , the symbol of deserted love. She beckoned (wafted) to Aeneas to come back to Carthage.

Medea gathered the enchanted herbs that did renew old Aeson

Jason, a famous greek hero led an expedition to colchis in search of golden roms fleece . Medea , his wife helped him to win the golden fleece. Besides she gathered herbs of magical properties by night and administered them to her aged father in law aeson to restore his youth.


(Elizabethans believed that ceetain herbs had magical properties if gathered by night )


But in his motion like an angel sings

Movement. Elizabethans beleived that every star or planet produced , in its motion a peculiar musical note and the combination of all those notes composed "the grand harmony of the universe" . The angels are said to be listening to the music of the stars.

Our souls are immortal and they produce divine music. But as long as the clothing of mortality the human body (vesture of decay) roughly (grossly ) encloses the soul, we cannot hear it.

Diana

Roman goddess of chastity and of the moon. She fell in live with the beautiful Endymion qnd came down from heaven every night to live with him.

The poet did feign that orpeus drew trees , stones and floods

The roman poet ovid narratex how orpheus , a greek musician made trees , stones and streams move from place to place by the power of his music.

In classical mythology the home of the dead, an area of darkness near hell

Was a beautiful youth who was loved by the moon. When he slept at night , the moon kissed him by pourjng down her silvery light.

We should hold the day with antipodes,

An elaborate compliment.


The antipodes denote the points on the earths surface which are exactly opposit to each other. England has australia for its antipode since the two countries are at opposite points of the earth. When the sun is shining in australia it is dark in england.


Bassanio says that if portia walks at night she will illuminate the area wuth her brightness , as the sun does on the other side of the world.

Manna

In the old testament of the bible , the jews are ddscribed as wandering people in the desert on a long journey . When they were starving god sent them divine food called manna which they found lying on the ground. This happened in answer to moses' prayer to god (Exodus 16:14)
