What is the role of collateral reports in the MSE?
No role - MSE only involves here and now observations, no inferences, opinions, etc.
What are the 6 domains of the MSE?
1. Appearance and behavior
2. Sensorium
3. Mood and Affect
4. Thought process
5. Thought content
6. Insight and Judgment
Things to look for in terms of appearance and behavior:
* age, race, gender
* bizarre, inappropriate behavior
* cooperativeness
* hygiene, grooming, dress
Things to look for in terms of assessing sensorium:
* LOC (loss of consciousness)
* Orientation (x3)
* Attention and concentration
* Memory - Immediate, STM, LTM
Things to look for in pt's mood and affect:
Mood - client's own words, subjective experience
Affect - observable emotions, may be flat, inappropriate, labile, etc.
Things to look for in the client's thought process:
* tangential or distracted?
* rate of speech
* loose associations or disorganized thoughts?
* circumstantial or obsessive?
Things to look for in the client's thought content:
* delusions, hallucinations, suicidal ideation, preoccupations, etc.
* can be difficult to ask about directly, so look for evidence in other areas of the interview
Things to look for in assessing insight and judgment
* insight into own mental illness and need for tx
* social judgment, ability to make decisions
* judgment also includes the ability to abstract
