proposes that tehe social environment places stress on the family. Violent families often have multiple problems that deplete their personal resources. When caregivers' physical, financial, and/ or emotional resources are strained, there is higher probability that family conflict will result in violence; or even if they abuse alcohol, drug, mental illness or inadequate relief from caregiving responsibilites.

Define Child Abuse
is ANY physical or mental injury, sexual abuse, exploitation, negligent, or maltreatment or a child under the age of 18
Define negligent treatment
the failure of a parent or substitute to provide, for reasons other thtn poverty, adequate food, clothing, shelter, or medical care to seriously endanger the physical health of the child
What is the diffence between Physical injury and Mental injury?
Physical injury- include, but not limited to:
- lacerations
- fractured bones
- internal injuries
- severe bruising...etc.

Mental injury:
- harm to a child's pyschological or intelletual functioning.
- Signs exhihibit: anxiety, depression, withdrawal, outward aggressive behavior or combination of either.

How to report Child Abuse:
Carefully doc. the physical evidence without making judgments: Reports of the VICTIM:
- the name
- current location
- type of abuse (neglect, sexual, etc)
- types of injuries and severity
- parent or caregivers account of the injury
- Why do you suspect abuse
- in the client's records, chart observations and report to CPA.
What are some possible reasons why mistreated children do not reveal they are being mistreated?
- have lived with being abused their whole lives may think it is normal or that they deserve the abuse b/c they did something wrong.
- Too young to report;
- too young to understand what has happened to them.
- feel loyal
- ashamed or embarrassed
- blame themselves
- threatned or bribed
- worry about getting the family member in trouble
If children are not successfully treated for their psychological problem due to abuse what might they end up developing and what are the symptoms?

what are some physical acts that can denote sibling abuse?
one sibling hitting, biting, shoving, excessive tickling ("normal sibling rivalry")
This abuse has the classic features of retian hemorrhage and intracranial injury.
SBS (shaken-baby syndrome)
- violently shake infants by their extremities or shoulders
- causes them to have whiplash induces intracranial and intro ocular bleeding iwth NO external signs of head trauma
- infants most often present in the ER with respiratory or apnea difficulties
- difficut to diagnose
- possibe death or permanent disability
- This kind of abuse is also hard to detect, diagnose and treat. Parents invent or directly induce their children's illnesses or symptoms and then seek medical assistance.
Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy
- mothers are often times the abusers
- parent are usually deceptive - pretending to care
- 10% victims of MSP die each year
Of this population, the notionis they are less likely to be innocent vitims of abuse b/c this is a challenging period of parents and the abuse maybe deserved.
