What are 3 types of memory?

RAM, ROM and virtual

What is RAM?

Random Access Memory is the main volatile memory in a computer and stores temporary data and instructions currently in use by the CPU.

What does volatile memory mean?

Data is lost when there is no power.

What is ROM?

Read Only Memory stores the boot process and cannot be overwritten as it is programmed at the manufacturer.

What is virtual memory?

Data not required is moved from RAM to the hard disk.

What is flash memory?

A special type of ROM that can be written to by a computer. It is solid state and portable.

Give 5 types of storage.

SSD, HDD, Flash (USB), Optical, Hybrid.

Try to avoid magnetic tape

What is a hard disk drive and how does it work?

It uses a stack of magnetic platters that rotate and has a read/wrote head to read the data. They are high capacity at very low cost.

What is a solid state drive and how does it work?

It uses flash memory and there are no moving parts meaning there is no delay in accessing data. This causes lower heat/sound; they're lightweight but have a lower capacity.

What is a hybrid drive and how does it work?

Magnetic capacity storage with frequently accessed data being stored in a solid state device. E.g. CCTV

Examples of optical:

CD ~ CD-ROM ~ CD-R ~ CD-RW

What are the typical units of RAM?

GB and MB

When is ROM memory not necessarily read only.

When it is an EEPROM (very reliable)

What happens when RAM is full?

The computer starts to use secondary storage as virtual RAM.

What is flash memory made up of?

NANS gates / flip flop

What are the different types of flash memory?

NAND and NOR
