What is the STM?

The short-term memory model

What is the LTM?

Long-term memory model

What are the durations of your sensory, short term and long term stores?

Less than 1s
18-30s
Up to a life time

What are the capacities of your sensory, short term and long-term memory stores?

Very large
7+/- 2
Unlimited

Describe the basic outline of the multi-store model of memory and the name of the psychologist(s) who formed the explanation.

Atkinson and Shiffrin
Proposed the idea that our memories pass through 3 stores: sensory, short term and long term. In order for memories to be moved into our long ter memory we need to rehearse the information. If a memory is NOT rehearsed, it leads to decay of that particular memory.

How can information be encoded into our memory?

Visual processes- how it looks
Semantic processes- what is means
Acoustic processes- how it sounds

Who provided empirical evidence for the multi-store model of memory and STM? What study did they carry out?

Peterson and Peterson
Participants had to recall sets of three letters e.g GBY. Participants were then required to count back in 3's from a number to prevent rehearsal. The intervals the numbers were required to be said for lengthened each time.
They found participants struggled to retain any information after 18's.

What are the strengths and limitations of research into the MSM?

Studies tend to lack ecological validity due to the setting of and the content of the experiment not being represenatative of real life occurances. Remembering random letters and counting back in 3's isn't an everyday task.
They also failed to control for participant variables, meaning the results are difficult to generalise as no two people remember items the same.

What case study supports the idea of the MSM and why?

Hm has amnesia. He has trouble recalling events from his long-term memory (e.g mother dying) but his short term memory is still in tact.

What are the strengths of the multistore model?

Research is scientific and therefore can be replicated to be further assessed for validity and to make improvements
There is support from multiple researchers on there being multiple stores for memory.

What are the limitations of the multistore model?

Humans are more complex, the model is reductionist as it removes the
