What is memory? |
Being able to take information from your environment and storing it to recall later. |
What is capacity? |
Amount of information that can be stored in your memory. |
What is duration? |
How long you can hold information in your brain. |
acoustically encoding |
stored as sound ( cat bat rat) |
visually encoded |
stored as an image |
semantically encoded |
stored based on the meaning of something |
What are the three types of memory? |
Sensory register, LTM, STM |
Describe the sensory register? |
Temporarily stores info from our senses. If attention is not paid disappears through spontaneous decay. Limited capacity, limited duration. Info coded based on the sense eg auditory, visual or tactile. |
Describe the STM? |
Limited capacity and limited duration. Coding usually through sound. |
Describe the LTM? |
Unlimited capacity, permanent, semantic coding (meaning of info) |
3 types of LTM? |
Episodic, semantic and procedural |
what is episodic memory? |
Personal events, it includes memory of the event, people, objects and behavior involved time stamped. Retrieved quickly and we are aware we are doing so. |
what is semantic memory? |
Stores facts and knowledge that we've learnt. Recalled deliberately but aren't time stamped. Less personal and more facts. Such as capital cities. |
what is procedural memory? |
Knowledge of how to do things. We recall these memories without searching for them. Typically learnt through repetition and practice. EG reading, walking or driving. |
If you cant retrieve a memory it is... |
Forgotten. |
Forgetting info in the STM? |
Info is no lon |
