What are the three stages of the cognitive process of memory?

Encoding

What is sensory memory?

Preservation of memory in sensory form for brief time

What is short-term memory?

A limited capacity storage that can hold unrehearsed info

What is rehearsal?

The process of repeatedly verbalizing info

What is maintenance rehearsal?

Maintaining info for immediate use

What is elaborate rehearsal?

Increasing the chances for info being retained for future use

What is iconic memory?

Visual memory that holds images long enough to be encoded into stm

What is echoic memory?

Auditory memory that holds sounds long enough to be encoded into stm(1 second or less)

What depends on the limit of working memory?

-# of items trying to recall

-your undivided attention

-chunking

What are the three compenents of Working Memory?

Central Executive- integrates info from WM with info from LTM

Phonological Loop-briefly stores sounds

Visuo-Spatial Sketch Pad-stores visual/spatial representations of items

How short is STM?

Well speed of presentation doesnt matter however the number of items between cue and target does. Therefore it said that new info displaces old info in working memory

What is consolidation?

The process of moving STM into LTM

What are the LTM processes?

Shallow-analysis of surface features, lower numbers of words recalled

Deep-analysis of semantic features(meaning)

What is implicit memory?

Memory that requires no intentional remembering. Motor/perceptual skills.

What is explicit memory?

Intentional remembering is required. Facts, events.

What is declaritive memory?

Handles factual info like names, dates, faces etc

What is procedural memory?

Handles actions, skills and conditioned responses like riding a bike and tying your shoes

From declaritive memory, what is episodic memory?

Recollections of personal events

And semantic memory?

General knowledge

What types of amnesia are there?

Retrograde- loss of ability to recall memories

Anterograde- inability to form new memories
