STM
Your memory for immediate events. STmemories last for a very short time and dissappear unless they are rehearsed. Limited duration and Limited capacity.
LTM
Your memory for events that have happened in the past. Potentally unlimited capactiy and duration.
Duration
A measure of how long a memory lasts before it is no longer available. STM has very limited duration, LTM has a potentillay unlimited duration.
Capacity
A measure of how much acan be held in the memory. STM has limited capacity, 7 +- 2 chunks. LTM is potentially unlimited.
Encoding
The way information ios changed so that it can be stored in memory. STM - acoustically. LTM - sematic.
Chunking
Miller (1956) proposed that the capacity of STM can be enhanced by chunking information together.
Multi-Store Model
An explanation of how the memory process works. It involves sensory memory (SM), Attention, STM, Maintanance Rehersal, Elaborate Rehersal, LTM, and Retrieval.
