Bipolar Disorder--describe
*marked by shifts in a person's mood, energy and ability to function
*characterized by mania, hypomania, depression and concurrent mania and depression with periods of normal functioning in between
*risk for harming self or others
*onset usually before age 30
Define Bipolar I
At least one episode of mania alternating with major depression
Define Bipolar II
Hypomanic episodes alternating with major depression
Define cyclothymia
Hypomanic episodes alternating with minor depressive episodes (at least 2 years in duration)
Define rapid cycling
*Four or more mood episodes in a 12-month period
*poorer global functioning, high recurrence risk and resistance to conventional somatic treatments

*initially drawn twice weekly and then every 2-3 months during long term treatment

* 0.5-1.5 mEq

* toxicity signs include muscle weakness, confusion, seizures, tremor, flattened t waves (cardiac/respiratory changes), multiple organ failure
