What did the Tang do to make travel along the Silk Road safe? What
type of cultural exchanges resulted from the Silk Road during the Tang
dynasty?
They welcomed visitors and made travel safe by taking control of much of Central Asia.
How did Buddhism come into China?
Because of the open trade and travel Buddhism had come to China hundreds of years before Tang. But during Tang it became a major part of Chinese life.
How did Buddhism continue to spread
during the Tang dynasty?
Buddhist monks came to teach in China and Chinese went to India to study. Monks ran schools, hospitals and lodging gaining exposure to people of all walks of life.
Why did foreigners and their beliefs become less welcome in China toward the end of the Tang dynasty?
Uighurs were attacking China so restrictions where placed on foreigners to protect the dynasty. Some resented the wealth of the monks while the Tang government was in need of money.
How did the Mongols help to encourage overland trade along the Silk Road?
The Mongols encouraged cultural exchange and respected merchants. Stations were set up every 20 miles on the Silk Road so traders could rest and get food.
What cultural exchanges happened between Europe and China as a result of the increase in trade during Mongol rule?
Foreigners brought skills like Muslim architecture, Persian astronomy, math and medicine. Europeans learned about gunpowder and printing from the Chinese.
How did maritime trade flourish under the Mongols?
Ships from India brought diamonds an pearls. Ginger, cotton and muslin (fabric) came from Ceylon. Black pepper, white walnuts and cloves came from Java.
Who was Marco Polo?
He was an Italian who was appointed to the Chinese government under Mongol rule. He was sent on inspection tours around China. He wrote about his travels in China giving European's a firsthand look at China.
Why were marco polo's travels important?
The accounts of his travels stimulated interest in trade.
What did tributaries have to do?
They had to pay tribute to a conquerer. They were required to kowtow to the emperor.
How did Zheng He’s maritime expeditions
help expand China’s foreign contacts under the Ming dynasty?
As the "Admirial of the Western Sea" he displayed China's power, gave gifts and collect tribute. Thirty or more places that he visited became tributaries.
Why did Ming rulers eventually turn inward?
When Zheng He died the government needed money to fight off the Mongol's attempt to take over. The expensive expeditions stopped, travel was forbidden outside China and any contact with foreigners had to be government approved.
What ultimately happened
to the Ming dynasty?
Ming's desire for uniformity made it difficult for the government to change in response to new conditions. Peasants rebelled and brought an end to the government.
