Albuterol (MDI/Inh)

PC: Beta 2 adrenergic, acts on airway smooth muscle causing bronchodilation


TU: Bronchospasm 2 to COPD, asthma


SE: tachycardia, HTN, nervousness, restlessness

CONTRA: use cautiously w/cardiac pt **may cause paradoxical bronchospasm


Teach: appropriate administration, take as directed, call HCP if no relief.



Epinephrine (Epi)


IV, IM, Subq, inh

PC: alpha/beta adrenergic. Directly acts on tissues innervated by SNS, dose related physiologic response low dose Beta1 for HR & force of contraction. Moderate dose for bronchodilation of the lungs. High dose/IV drip vasoconstriction for severe hypotension


TU: Anaphylactic reaction/severe allergy, Severe hypotension, Cardiac arrest


SE: HTN, chest pain (angina), tachycardia


LABS: N/A


CONTRA: narrow angle glaucome, labot, hypotension w/o fluid volume


Teach: s/sx to treat, instruct pt on injection tech, call 911, repeat if no relief

Tamsulosin (PO)

PC: alpha blocker: relax/dilating the vasculature of the smooth muscle near prostate to facilitate urine flow.


TU: BPH, Benign prostate hyperplasia


SE: dizziness, HA r/t orthostatic hypotension


LABS: N/A


Contra: hypotension


Teach: stand up slowly, report frequency, unable to void, or urgency to HCP

Metoprolol (PO/IV)

PC: Beta blocker, decrease BP/HR to decrease workload of heart


TU: HTN, prevent MI


SE: bradycardia, hypotension

CONTRA: hypotension/ bradycardia, heart failure


TEACH: monitor BP & Pulse, call HCP for low BP, HR, dizziness, SOB

Cardilol (PO)

PC: alpha & beta 1&2 blocker, improves cardiac output

PC: Cholinergic, facilitates outflow of aqueous humor of the eye
