Uses - Relieves moderate to severe pain, persistant non-producitive cough Major SE - Drowsiness, dizziness, Hypotension, Decreased appetite Normal dosage : PO: 2 mg - 4mg q3 -q4h 2-8mg/dose Ext.Re: 8-64 mg once daily IV - 1mg - 2mg q3-q4h Nursing Implications : monitor Vital signs, if Respirations <12/min, hold dose and call physician, Assess pain and effect of med, cough - type frequency and severity. Increase fluid intake, monitor bowel activity, cough and deep breath exercises. Avoid Alcohol, avoid tasks that require alertness, motor skills until response to drug is established. change position slowly. may cause tolerance/dependence due to prolonged use |
