Theraputic effect: Decreased symptoms of histamine excess. Relief of acute dystonic reactions. Prevention of motion sickness. Suppression of cough

Action: Antagonizes the effects of histamine at H1-receptor sites; does not bind to or inactivate histamine. Significant CNS depressant and anticholinergic properties.

Common s/e: drowsiness, anorexia, dry mouth

RN considerations: Assess uticaria & patency of airway, assess movement disorder before & after administration, assess sleep paterns, assess N/V, BS, abd pain, assess sleep patterns, assess degree of itching, rash, inflammation
