Renal

Pertaining to kidneys

Renal cortex

Outer region of the kidney. Contains millions of nephrons.

Medulla

Beneath the renal cortex. Contains most of urine in the kidney. Triangular shapes. Narrow points (papillae) empty into calyces.

Nephrons

Produce urine through filtration, reabsorption, and secretion.

Reabsorption

Returning blood after filtration.

Ureters

Two tubes transport urine from kidneys to bladder

Peristalsis

Wave like contractions to move body fluid (urine)

Folds allowing expansion of stomach or bladder

Nephrosis. Condition where excess protein is lost through urine. Results in low levels of protein in blood.

Abnormal high concentration of protein in urine.

Hypoproteinemia

Abnormal low concentration of protein in the BLOOD.

Dilation (swelling) of kidney(s).

Type of nephritis. Inflammation of the glomeruli (inside the nephrons) causing red blood cells and proteins to leak into the urine.

Floating kidney. Dropping of kidney into pelvic area when standing.

Pyonephrosis. Formation or discharge of pus of the kidney. Suppuration of kidney.

Acute pain in kidney area due to blockage of kidney stone.
