Nervous System Does What?

Maintains Homeostasis, Faster Body Processes, Electrical Impulses, Sends messages

What are the two parts of the Nervous System?

CNS and PNS

CNS contains what?

Brains, Spinal Cord

PNS Contains What?

31 pairs of spinal nerves, 12 cranial nerves and contains ANS (controls involuntary functions)

3 main parts of Neuron?

Cell Body - protects structures and keeps cell energized and functional

Dendrites - gather info, sends to cell body

Axon - Protected by myelin, carries Electrical Impulses, transmits signals to other cells

What Happens if damage to axon or myelin sheath occurs?

Electrical Impulses may be lost, organs, muscles may not function properly

(ANS) Autonomic Nervous System divided into what two systems?

CNS protected by what?

Brain protected by cranium

Spianal cord protected by vertebral column and extends from base of brain to 2nd lumbar vertebra

What are the 3 major Brain Divisions?

CNS 3 membranes known as meninges

1. Dura mater

2. Arachnoid (CSF) in subarachnoid space

3. Pai mater (on brain)

Hydrocephalus?

Water on brain ( too much CSF) Harmful pressure on brain

Multiple Sclerosis (MS)

Body defense attacks meylin around Nerve fibers. Creates scar tissue, makes signals on nerves distorted. Loss of muscle strength

Spina bifida

Birth defect (incomplete Spinal Cord) usually in lumbar area

Shingles

Viral infection of nerve roots, causes rash. Same virus as Chicken pox

(CVA) Cerebrovascular Accident

Stroke of brain, damage or death to tissue caused by interruption of blood

Sciatica

Severe nerve pain, numbness (Radiated from buttocks) Nerve root is compressed due to herniated disk

Parkinson's disease

Results in tremors, changes in speech and dimentia

Epilepsy

Affecting CNS, disturbed electrical rhythms in CNS

Cerebral Palsy (CP)

Affect body movement, balance, affects cerebellum

Myelogram

Checks for blockage in spinal cord, use contrast media, spinal needle inserted between L3 - L4. Goes into subarachnoid space where CSF is

Lumbar Puncture (LP)

EEG ( Electroencephalogram

PET ( positron emission tomography)

Endocrine system?

Regulates hormones in body, in charge of slow body process "cell growth", Glands which secrete chemicals

Pituitary Gland

Smallest , pea sized, attached to lower surface of hypothalamus, MASTER GLAND

Thyroid Gland

Largest Gland, iodine is needed in diet to function properly. Has 4 parathyroid glands

Adrenal Gland

Triangular Shape on top of kidneys ( outer layer called adrenal cortex) ( Inner layer called adrenal medulla)

Pancreas Gland

Goiter

Enlargement of Thyroid Gland, inadequate supply of thyroid hormone, becomes enlarged

Addison's disease

Diabetes

Pancreas doesn't secrete adequate amounts of insulin

Type 1 vs type 2 diabetes

Exophthalmos

Edema in tissues of eye sockets cause bulging of eyes. Hyperthyroidism can cause this
