COAGULATION
*root: coagul/o
*examples: anticoagulant, coagulopathy
*notes: Coagulo refers to the blood's ability to form clots. It comes from a Latin word, coagulum, which comes from the world of cheese making. Coagulum is added to milk to make it curdle and begin the process of turning milk into cheese.
CLOT
*root: thromb/o
*examples: thrombocyte, thrombosis
*notes: The blood's ability to clot can be both life saving and life threatening. When the body is wounded, clotting enables the body to stop the bleeding and begin the healing process. Hemophilia is a disease in which the blood doesn't clot well, potentially causing minor cuts to become life-threatening injuries. Clots become life threatening when they form in the bloodstream in places where they aren't needed, which could block blood flow to vital organs.

BLOOD

*roots: hem/o, hemat/o
*examples: hemolysis, hematology
*notes: The average-sized man has almost 6 quarts of blood in his body. The average-sized woman has almost 4 quarts.

WHITE

*root: leuk/o
*examples: leukocytes, leukemia
*notes: Leukocytes, which are white blood cells, act as the bloodstream's police force and garbage collectors. They are the primary responders to infection and tissue damage. They also remove debris from the bloodstream through a process called phagocytosis (remember: phago means to eat) and begin the process of cell repair.

CELL

*root: cyt/o
*examples: erythrocyte, thrombocytosis
*notes: Cyto comes from a Greek word meaning jar or basket. The word in Greek can also refer to the individual units of a beehive, which is probably where the connection with human cells comes from.
