From smallest to largest, how is the human body structured?

cells<tissues<organs<systems

cells

Smallest units of life

What is the basic structure of a cell?

Cell membrane, cytoplasm, nucleus

Cell membrane

Maintains integrity of the cell and controls passage of materials into and out of the cell

Nucleus

Control center of the cell that determines how the cell will function as well as its basic structure

Cytoplasm

Gel like fluid inside the cell that provides a medium for chemical reaction and a platform upon which organelles can operate

Organelles

"Little organs" suspended within the cytoplasm that have specific roles in the cell's function

5 major types of cells

Bone, blood, muscle, skin, nerve

Epithelial tissues

Cover surfaces and line cavities

Functions of epithelial tissues

Protection, secretion, absorption, excretion, filtration, diffusion, sensory reception

Shapes of epithelial cells

Squamous, cuboidal, columnar

Connective tissues

Hold the body together

Types of connective tissue

Blood, osseous, cartilage, adipose, fibrous

Muscular tissues

Allow body movement

Nervous tissues

Conducts nervous impulses

What makes up a body system?

Groups of organs that work together for a specific purpose

Integumentary system

Skin, hair, sweat, and sebaceous glands that work together to form protective coverings

Musculoskeletal system

Muscle and bones that work together for movement, body framework, and organ support

Blood and lymphatic system

Carry oxygen (et. al.) throughout the body and fight infection

Cardiovascular system

Heart and blood

Gastrointestinal system

Transports food, absorbs nutrients, excretes waste

Five body cavities

Cranial, spinal, thoracic, pleural, abdominal

Cranial cavity

Houses the brain; surrounded by the cranium (skull)

Spinal cavity

Houses the spine, surrounded by vertebrae

Thoracic cavity

Houses the heart and lungs, surrounded by ribs, sternum, and vertebrae.

Mediastinum

(May-dee-uh-STY-num)

Space between the lungs, located in the thoracic cavity

Pleural cavity

Space within the pleurae that surround the lungs

Abdominal cavity

Houses stomach, liver, and intestines.
