Scope of Practice
Overall emergency care that an emt is trained to provide
Standard of Care
Care expected to be provided by an EMT with similar training managing a patient in a similar situation. Set Guidlines.
Duty to Act
Legal obligation that an EMT while on duty has to stop and render aid. If off duty, it depends on your state.
Good Samaritan Law
Protects a person who is not being paid for his services from liability for acts performed in good faith unless those acts constitute gross negligence.
What are the three types of consent
Expressed consent, Implied consent, minor consent.
Implied Consent
You assume that an unresponsive patient or altered mental status patient would agree to emergency care.
Expressed Consent
Must be obtained from every conscious, mntally competent adult before treatments is started. The patient must be of legal age, competent to make a decision.
Consent to treat a minor or a mentally imcompetent adult
To treat a minor, consent must be obtained from legal guardian. If parent isn't available, consent is implied. no parent consent needed for an emancipated minor (married, pregnant, parent)
