Alveoli

Air cells of the lungs; known as pulmonary parenchyma (functional units of the lungs)

Epiglottis

A thin, leaf shaped structure located immediately posterior to the roof of the tongue; covers the entrance of the larynx when the individual swallows

Laryngopharynx

Lower portion of the pharynx that extends from the vestibule of the larynx (the portion just above the vocal cords) to the lower most cartilage of the larynx

Pharynx

The throat; a tubular structure about 13 cm long that extends from the base of the skull to the esophagus and is situated just in front of the cervical vertebrae. The pharynx serves as a passageway for air from the nasal cavity to the larynx and for the food from the mouth to the esophagus. It serves both the respiratory and the digestive system.

Pulmonary Parenchyma

The functional units of the Lungs, which have very think walls that allow for the exchange of gases between the lungs and the blood.

Visceral Pleura

Portion of the pleura that is closest to the internal organs.

Sputum

Substance coughed up by the Lungs, bronchi, and trachea that is expelled through the mouth; sputum is not the same as saliva, which is secreted by the salivary glands

Nasopharynx

Part of the pharynx located above the soft palate.

Electrocardiograph

A graphic record of the electrical action of the heart as reflected from various angles to the surface of the skin; known as EKG or ECG

Defibrillation

Stopping fibrillation of the heart by use of drugs or by physical means

Arrhythmias

Deviation from the normal pattern or rhythm of the heartbeat

Myocardial Infarction

Heart attack; a condition caused by occlusion of one or more coronary artery's. This life-threatening condition results when my myocardial tissue is destroyed in areas of the heart that are deprived of an adequate blood supply due to occluded vessels.

Professional trained individual capable of performing the ultrasound examination

Thallium Stress Testing

One of several nuclear stress test. It is a combination of testing with thallium imaging to access coronary bloodflow during exercise.

Bradycardia

Abnormally slowed respiratory rate.

Angiogram

Series of x-rays of a blood vessels after injection of radiopaque substance.

Amplified

Made larger for enlarged. The amplifier of electrocardiograph enlarges the electrical impulse activity and the recordings can be read more easily.
