Idea of imposing culture (food, clothing, language music) of one culture into another. usually from a large, economically, or military powerful nation that instills itself into small and less important ones. AMERICA=Media exporter which is imposed western values and images. We can instill our culture or economic values into other cultures
Guerilla Semiotics
Using a medium to critique that medium and often offering negative commentary. form of public activism which is generally an opposition to commercialism.

Terms are tools that the marketing advertisers use to reshape hearts and minds of the consumer.

Zappers: constant channel surfers, can't sit through a single show
Casuals: in between locals and zappers

US, Sonny Bono Copyright Term Extension Act of 1998, signed by Bill Clinton, extended the diration of UC copyrights by 20 years. Before the act, copyrights lasted for life of the author plus fifty years after (individual) or for corporate, 75 to 95 years more. No additional works made after 1923 or after will never the public domain until 2019. Did not revive already expired, like Europ.
Structure vs. Agency
Agency refers to the capacity of indvidual humans to act independingy and make free choices. Structure refers to those factors such as social class, religion, gender, ethnicity, customs etc. (limits or influences the opportunities that individuals have.
Remix Culture
a culture that is dominated by amateur creators--creators who are no longer willing to be merely passive reeptors of content. Demanding broader right, to mash-up and remix, to be producers, to cut. sample paste....In order to produce something which is distinct of their own social and creative innovation distinctive. Fueling this are the new tech inventions and innovations. To what extent can be borrowed?

Coined in 1984 by Negaitveland. Aims to expose the messages of mass media, using sometimes illegal means. Radio frequency jamming, Billboard Liberation from, graffiti, Ad-busters. Use of a medium to critique that medium or it's use in society. ACTIVISM

The U2 Record Incident
Negativland's project was the infamous U2 EP. Parody songs from U2. Record label sued N-land, use of the name and the intent to "confuse" U2 fans.
The band interests were political, claiming their use of the album failed under the Fair Use doctrine. Main subject of Sonic Outlaws.

Hypodermic Needle Theory
The hypodermic needle model is a model of communications also referred to as the magic bullet perspective, or the transmission-belt model. Implied thatthe mass media had a direct immediate and powerful influence on audiences. "strong effects" result from rise in popularization of radio and TV, advertising and prop during the war.

Commodity Fetishism
Marxist theory that social relationships and individuals are transformed into objective relationships with commodities or money. Therefore the relationship between producer and consumer disappears. replaces inter-human relationships with the human/objects. Analyze the relationship. Neither side is full conscious of the political and social positions they occupy.
Love marks
marketing technique to replace the idea of brands that was invented by Kevin Roberts and is promoted by his complay Saatchi and Saatchi. Combines the necessity of respect and love, achieved by 3 main ingredients:
Mystery: Great stores, pas, present, and future.
Sensuality: Touch, sounds, smell, sight.
Create loyalty, Brands attract respect, but not love. Love marks command both love AND respect.
Commitment: empathy and inspiration
Peer Production
Term coined by Harvard Law professor Benkler, to describe new economic model of economic production in which the creative energy of large numbers of people is coordinated into large, meaningful projects mostly without tradition hierarchal organization. Describes collaborative efforts such as free and open source software and Wiki which are based on sharing info.
