Sinusitis

Is inflammation of the sinuses most often the maxillary and frontal sinuses

Sinusitis

Caused by bacteria virus or rarely a fungus

Acute sinusitis

Follows obstruction of the flow of secretions from the sinus

Cause: allergic rhinitis, deviated sputum, nasal polyps, tumors, airborne pollutants, and inhale drugs such as cocaine

Chronic sinusitis

A permanent thickening of the mucous membranes in the sinuses after repeated infections

Signs and symptoms

Pain or a feeling of heaviness over the affected area they may report purulent drainage from the nose

Fever may be present in the white blood cell (WBC)count may be elevated

Complications of chronic sinusitis may follow acute sinusitis

Potential complications or meningitis, brain abscess, osteomyelitis, and orbital cellulitis

Suspect neurologic complications if the patient has a high fever, vomiting, chills, seizures, or blurred vision

Medical diagnosis and treatment

Sinus x rays are computed tomography (CT) and culture or drainage can be obtained with a nasal endoscope
