A complication of peptic ulcers is bleeding in the GI. How can you tell the difference between an upper GI bleed and a lower GI bleed?

Upper GI --> bright red or coffee-ground vomit (hematemesis).

Lower GI bleed --> black stool (melena).

Patient admitted for PUD wants to have some Advil to control the pain. He says he takes them every day for muscle pain. What is something you would say?

You can educate the patient and let them know that NSAIDs like Advil can cause PUD by breaking down the stomach lining.

The drugs you could prescribe instead are the same as those for GERD. (remember: Pant, Met, Mag's Fam)
