Why is motor alignment important?
(1) Couplings have limited ability to withstand misalignment.
(2) Proper alignment increases coupling service life. (3) Proper alignment protects both the prime mover (motor) and the driven device bearing surfaces. |
What is the instrument often used to check alignment of two shafts?
Dial indicator
What is ment by cold setting?
Cold-setting, Is when alignment is performed when the equipment is not running and is at or near ambient temperatures.
What is Hot alignment?
Hot alignment, is performed when the equipment is operating at its highest temperature.
What is concentricity?
The quality of having the same center.
What is ment by Run-out and how do you check it?
(1) The radial variation from a true circle.
(2) With the coupling disconnected, mount the magnetic base of the dial indicator to the motor half coupling, position the indicator on the pump half coupling and center the indicator plunger. Rotate the pump shaft until the dial indicator reaches a maximum travel, then zero the dial indicator. Rotate the pump shaft again until the dial indicator reaches a maximum value. This shows the amount of runout. |
What is High Temperature Correction? and what are the two methods for achieving this?
When a foot-mounted process pump must operate at elevated temperatures, some adjustment will be necessary to allow for the thermal growth that takes place between the cold condition and the high operating temperature. As the pump heats up, the shaft centerline will be moved up, creating an offset with the motor shaft. There are two methods for handling this situation, (1) Cold-setting, Is when alignment is performed when the equipment is not running and is at or near ambient temperatures, and (2) Hot alignment, is performed when the equipment is operating at its highest temperature.

What is Soft Foot?
Soft Foot is a condition in which one of the feet does not sit flat on the base. The foot or the base may have been warped. When you tighten the bolt on the foot, the machinery will distort.
