Describe the structure and function of the plasma membrane (cell membrane)
Structure-Fluid Mosaic Model; composed of phospholipids with hydrophilic (polar)heads and hydrophobic(non-polar)tails; Other proteins may also be incorporated
Function- Selective permeability allows the regulation of the conditions inside the cell independently from the outside environment
Prokaryote vs. Eukaryotic
Prokaryote- Bacteria; cell wall present but no plasma membrane; no nucleus; ribosomes made of 30s and 50s subunits; no membrane bound organelles
Eukaryote- Protists, fungi, plants and animals; cell wall only in fungi and plants; nucleus; ribosomes made of 40s and 60s subunits; membrane bound organelles
Summarize Cell Theory
-All living things are composed of cells
-The cell is the basic functional unit of life'
-Cells arise only from pre-existing cells
-Cells carry genetic information in the form of DNA. This genetic material is passed from parent to daughter cell
Describe the 3 types of microscopy
1. Compount light microscopy; used on dead cells, uses lenses; need to dye the cells
2. Phase Contrast; used on living cells, special light microscope; uses different refractive indexes
3. Electron Microscopy; used on dead cells; requires dyes often made up of heavy metals; tissues must be fixed and thinly sectioned
What is Autoradiography?
Technique using radioactive molecules to identify cell structure and biochemical activity. Can be used to study protein synthesis. Used on living cells
